The most important factors in building the show's early reputation were the variety, authenticity, and quality of the specimens on display. Organizers believe this was the first show of its kind to assemble hobby enthusiasts, curators/professionals, and the public for discovery and discussion. Every year, a mineral or group of minerals is designated as the show's theme mineral. Kids love the popular junior education area with hands-on science activities (as much as they love shows with massive dinosaur skeletons). This show is open to the public (admission is charged) and includes a lecture series and vendor displays for both serious and novice collectors, with gems, minerals, crystals, beads and fossils, finished jewelry, lapidary supplies and equipment, and books for rockhounds and hobbyists. It was an immediate hit and became an annual February event, eventually settling at Tucson Convention Center where it remains today. In early 2020, the museum increased its scope by moving to a larger space in the Historic Pima County Courthouse, next to the new Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center in downtown Tucson.
